In Charlevoix, wellness is usually experienced in public nordic spas: by reservation, on fixed schedules, shared with strangers, away from where you sleep. Our chalets in Cap-à-l'Aigle, La Malbaie, offer exactly the opposite — the same Scandinavian thermal ritual, but entirely private, in your own villa, with no outside booking, available at any hour of the day or night, reserved for your group alone.
The principle is the thermal cycle nordic countries have practised for centuries: you heat up (dry sauna at 80 °C, hammam at 45 °C), cool down sharply (frozen air, snow, a cold shower), then let the body recover at rest before starting again. This hot-cold contrast is well-documented for its effects on circulation, muscle recovery and sleep. Experienced in private, with no queue and no schedule, it becomes a true escape.
The ritual, step by step. Nothing is imposed, but here is the sequence the regulars follow:
- 1. The hot sauna — settle into the dry sauna and let the heat build, ten to fifteen minutes, until the first real sweat.
- 2. The cold shock — step out into Charlevoix's frozen air (or a cold shower) for a few minutes, to bring your body temperature down.
- 3. Unwind in the spa — slip back into the hot water of the spa for about ten minutes, under the stars, to gently restart circulation.
- 4. The wet variation — instead of the dry sauna, move to the hammam (steam sauna), gentler on the airways, where the chalet is equipped for it.
- 5. Rest — stretch out on the loungers by the pool, breathe, let the body come back to itself.
- 6. A swim — when the season allows, a few lengths in the private pool close the cycle.
Repeat the cycle two or three times — always in private, in facilities reserved for your group alone: no queue, no schedule, no strangers.
The experience varies by property:
- Le Littoral chalet — solid-wood Finnish sauna, private heated pool and outdoor spa, facing the forest and the river.
- L'Embâcle — private pool and spa nestled in the clearing, open year-round, sheltered from the wind.
- Les Thermes chalet — a complete private thermal zone: hammam (steam sauna), dry sauna, fireside rest area and outdoor spa, in a wing isolated from the rest of the house.
- La Blanche — a private outdoor spa on the terrace, facing Cap-à-l'Aigle's sunsets, for relaxation without leaving the chalet.
