Riverside walk

Ten minutes by car, a spectacular walk awaits along the St. Lawrence shore. Park at the point on the map, then follow the river north on foot. A tide clock upstairs at the chalet helps you time it: we recommend low tide for an even more dramatic view and shores to explore. Bring warm layers — it gets cold quickly on the water.

Riverside walk

Some walks are taken for exercise. This one is for the spectacle. Ten minutes by car from the chalet Le Littoral in Cap-à-l'Aigle, La Malbaie, a stretch of St. Lawrence shoreline unfolds like a natural theatre whose staging changes with every tide.

The river as you've never seen it

Park at the point indicated on the map, then walk north following the shore. The St. Lawrence here bears no resemblance to the urban river seen from Quebec City or Montreal bridges. It is wide, powerful, wild. The Charlevoix mountains plunge into its waters, and the light — that Charlevoix light so celebrated by the Group of Seven painters and the Baie-Saint-Paul school — transforms the landscape hour by hour.

The low-tide secret

Upstairs at the villa, a tide clock is installed to help you time your visit. Our recommendation: low tide. The river retreats by dozens of metres, revealing a rocky foreshore dotted with tide pools, seaweed, and shells. Children love exploring here. Adults find a form of contemplation that few places in Charlevoix can offer.

At high tide, the walk is equally beautiful but different — the river laps at the rocks, and the sound of surf accompanies every step.

Practical tips

Bring layers: even in high summer, the offshore wind cools quickly. Shoes with grippy soles are recommended for wet rocks. And a camera, obviously — the sunsets over the river from this shore are among the most beautiful in the region.

On the way back, the Port-au-Persil wharf is fifteen minutes by car and offers another perspective on the river, more intimate, more village-like. And to extend the evening, your vacation home's outdoor spa with mountain views is the perfect conclusion. To discover all nearby activities, see our guide to renting a chalet in La Malbaie.
