Kayak and water activities
In Charlevoix, sea kayaking is not simply a water sport — it is a way of reading the landscape differently. From the water, the cliffs seem taller, the villages more intimate, and the St. Lawrence reveals a geography invisible from the road.
An exceptional water territory
The region offers a rare range for kayakers: the St. Lawrence estuary with its tides and currents, the Saguenay Fjord with its vertiginous walls rising over 400 metres, the coast between Baie-Saint-Paul and Tadoussac with its hidden coves. Tourisme Charlevoix centralizes the offerings of various outfitters — check their site for packages and departures.
The reference outfitters
Several quality operators serve the region. Katabatik, based near Baie-Saint-Paul, offers coastal sea kayaking as well as river descents. For the Saguenay Fjord, Fjord en Kayak in L'Anse-Saint-Jean provides small-group excursions with high-end fibreglass sea kayaks and thirty years of experience.
Conditions and recommendations
The St. Lawrence is a serious body of water — tides, winds, and currents demand respect and preparation. All reputable outfitters provide equipment and experienced guides. Advance booking is recommended, especially in July and August.
Nearby
After a day on the water, the chalet Le Littoral in Cap-à-l'Aigle, La Malbaie, Charlevoix, offers the perfect counterpoint. The outdoor spa soothes paddle-weary shoulders. The solid-wood sauna completes the recovery. And if you brought back fresh fish — the villa's gourmet kitchen, with its chef-grade equipment, is ready.
