What to do in Charlevoix in winter

4 min read

Charlevoix in winter is a destination in its own right. When snow blankets the mountains and the St. Lawrence River takes on steel-blue tones, the region transforms into a picture-postcard landscape that invites both adventure and contemplation. Alpine skiing with river views, snowshoeing through silent forests, outdoor spa under the stars, and comforting gastronomy — here's how to make the most of Charlevoix in winter. For year-round activities, see also our things to do in Charlevoix article.

Skiing and snowboarding at Le Massif de Charlevoix

Le Massif de Charlevoix is one of Quebec's finest ski resorts, and for good reason: it boasts the highest vertical drop east of the Canadian Rockies (770 metres) and is one of the rare places in the world where you ski literally downhill toward the sea — or rather, the St. Lawrence River, whose panoramic view accompanies every run. The resort averages 650 cm of snow per season thanks to the lake effect from the river, making it one of the snowiest ski areas in eastern North America.

Le Massif offers 53 varied runs from beginner to expert, with spectacular gladed terrain and steep pitches for those seeking a challenge. The Camp Boule sector features marked off-piste skiing in a magnificent forest setting. The drive from La Malbaie (about 1 h 30) passes through breathtaking winter landscapes. A 20-minute drive from La Malbaie, our chalets (Le Littoral, L'Embâcle) let you ski by day and enjoy a spa or fireplace by night.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing

For those who prefer a more contemplative pace, Charlevoix offers abundant snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities. The trails at Hautes-Gorges National Park are accessible in winter and offer a unique snowshoeing experience deep in snow-covered glacial valleys, surrounded by absolute silence. Domaine Forget, known for its summer music festivals, also offers snowshoe trails with river views. The La Malbaie cross-country ski centre features groomed trails for both classic and skate skiing, suited to all levels.

Mont Grand-Fonds, just 10 minutes from our chalets, also offers snowshoe trails and fat biking on snow — an increasingly popular activity that combines the physical effort of cycling with the pleasure of riding groomed forest trails. Pack warm layers and a hot drink in a thermos for breaks.

Spa and relaxation

After a day in the cold, there's nothing quite like the warmth of a spa or sauna to recover and unwind. The outdoor spa experience in winter is quintessentially Charlevoix: immersed in 38°C water while the air temperature hovers at -15°C, steam rises around you and stars shine above — it's a moment of pure magic. The contrast between hot and cold is invigorating, and the benefits for ski-weary muscles are immediate. After a day in the cold, a sauna or hot tub is hard to beat. Le Littoral and L'Embâcle have a sauna and outdoor spa.

For a more complete thermal experience, several regional spas offer hydrotherapy circuits (hot-cold-rest) in natural settings. But the ultimate luxury is having your own private spa and sauna right at your chalet, without needing to drive or share the space with other guests.

Where to eat

La Malbaie and Baie-Saint-Paul are packed with excellent restaurants that warm body and soul after a day of winter activities. Truchon in La Malbaie (see our restaurant guide) serves creative, comforting cuisine using local products — ideal for an après-ski dinner. Les Trois Canards offers a refined dining experience for special occasions. L'Orchydee and Vices Versa are more relaxed options with varied menus and generous portions. For a memorable Sunday brunch, Manoir Richelieu (Fairmont) serves a lavish buffet with views over the snow-covered river. Book ahead during peak winter season (holidays and March break), as the best tables fill up fast.
